Following International Women’s Day at the weekend, we reflected on how brands communicate with women in today’s media landscape.
At IMPACT, we’ve seen significant shifts over the past 25 years, from marketing mishaps, stereotypes and outdated messaging to genuinely meaningful progress. As a female-founded, female-led agency, we’ve had a front-row seat to what works (and what doesn’t) and how communication practices have evolved.
With women continuing to act as primary drivers of household purchasing decisions, it has never been more important for brands to resonate in a way that is inclusive, insight-driven, and facilitates connection.
Here are IMPACT’s top four principles for how brands can cut through the noise to effectively communicate with women:
1. Start with real understanding
A common mistake is grouping women together as a single audience, but their needs, motivations and priorities vary significantly depending on life stage, lifestyle and personal circumstances. This starts by looking beyond sales data alone to uncover the motivations behind behaviour.
Brands that invest in audience research, whether through surveys or behavioural analysis, are better positioned to develop messaging that speaks to specific experiences and create deeper moments of connection, rather than making broad assumptions.
At IMPACT, our behavioural specialist Kris White works with us to develop strategic narrative and audience profiles that combine behavioural insight with research to pinpoint what is needed to accurately tailor messaging.
2. Align with purpose and values
Female consumers are increasingly drawn to brands that stand for something beyond just the product.
This can include supporting causes they care about, creating community activations, or leading campaigns that advocate for positive change.
When executed thoughtfully, purpose-driven initiatives do more than just raise awareness. By inspiring engagement and strengthening a sense of collective identity, it positions the brand as authentic and meaningful, rather than purely transactional.
3. Be inclusive
Women want to see themselves represented authentically in brand storytelling. Perfect ideals and polished photoshop are increasingly out of touch with how people actually live.
Campaigns that showcase diverse bodies, backgrounds and life experiences create opportunities for stronger emotional connection and credibility appealing to consumers on a more personal level.
Our client Bare Mum is a strong example of this. Its founder, Amelie Cazzulino, built the brand based on her own experience, recognising a lack of honest depiction around recovery after birth. After discovering many other women shared the same challenges and recognising what they needed, she created Bare Mum to address this gap and show the real stories of postpartum.
4. Invite conversation
Overly directive or prescriptive messaging can reduce engagement so instead of talking at women, brands should aim to create dialogue. Open, conversational communication builds trust and positions brands as partners rather than authority figures.
As we all become increasingly brand-savvy, transparency and authenticity matter more than ever. Using inclusive language, inviting feedback and encouraging conversation helps create a more collaborative relationship between brands and their audiences.
