What is category authority?
Category authority is the ability for a company to become the recognised, trusted, and most frequently referenced voice in its market – the brand that journalists call first, that buyers shortlist instinctively, and that AI platforms recommend when someone asks “who’s the best in [your space]?”
It goes far beyond a good media article or a viral post. True category authority means your organisation shapes industry narratives, influences buyer perceptions, earns stakeholder trust, attracts stronger partnerships, and becomes the benchmark competitors are measured against. It isn’t claimed in a tagline – it’s earned across every touchpoint where credibility is formed: earned media, executive visibility, podcasts, owned research, industry commentary, customer proof points, and increasingly, AI-generated search results.
That last point matters more than most brands realise. Platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are now actively influencing buyer discovery and recommendations. The organisations that appear in those answers aren’t there by accident – they’ve built a body of evidence that algorithms recognise as authoritative.
Why is traditional PR no longer enough to build brand authority?
Traditional PR – a product launch here, an announcement there, a reactive media opportunity when something lands – remains important but is no longer sufficient to establish lasting authority. McKinsey’s B2B Pulse found that buyers now use an average of 10 interaction channels in their purchasing journey, up from five in 2016. A single media hit doesn’t cut through that complexity.
Today, brands need to understand how AI platforms describe their company, whether their executives are visible and trusted, what evidence supports their claims, what narratives dominate their category, and where competitors are outperforming them. That requires a far more strategic and integrated approach than campaign-led PR can deliver.
The agencies creating the most value now are those helping organisations build entire authority ecosystems – not simply generate coverage.
Why should a PR agency lead your category authority strategy?
Building category authority isn’t a single campaign. It’s an ongoing strategic process spanning narrative development, reputation management, executive profiling, thought leadership, media strategy, AI visibility optimisation, and trust-building across multiple channels.
Unlike marketing agencies focused primarily on paid reach or performance metrics, strategic PR agencies operate at the intersection of reputation, influence, trust, and narrative control.
We understand how conversations are formed, how journalists evaluate expertise, how leaders build credibility, and how audiences make decisions. We also understand something fundamental: authority is earned through consistency, evidence, and strategic positioning – not through a single moment of visibility.
At IMPACT, this increasingly means helping our clients assess their AI visibility, strengthen executive authority, identify trust and evidence gaps, create industry-leading insights, build stronger category narratives, and ensure they’re consistently present where influence is shaped.
What is the commercial value of category authority?
The business case is backed by data. Google and Kantar research shows strong brands command prices up to twice those of weaker competitors. Forrester found that 86% of B2B purchases stall during the buying process – meaning the organisations that have already established authority are the ones that get through. And Kantar BrandZ’s Strong Brands Portfolio outperformed the S&P 500 by 102.6% across a decade that included the Global Financial Crisis.
The companies most likely to appear in future buying conversations -whether through media, LinkedIn, podcasts, or AI-generated answers – will be the ones that invested early and consistently in becoming trusted category leaders.
That journey rarely starts with advertising. It starts with authority. And it starts with a conversation about where your brand sits today versus where it could be.
If that’s a conversation you’re ready to have, it’s one we have every day. Get in touch.

Five key takeaways:
- Awareness is no longer enough to win. The market has shifted – being loud doesn’t mean being trusted. The brands that win are the ones perceived as the definitive authority in their space, not just the most visible.
- Category authority is a commercial asset, not a marketing metric. It directly drives pricing power, inbound opportunities, shorter sales cycles, and resilience during disruption.
- AI is changing who gets found – and authority determines who shows up. The organisations that appear in AI answers have built a body of evidence that algorithms recognise as authoritative – and those that haven’t are invisible at the point of decision.
- Authority is earned across an ecosystem, not won in a single campaign. It’s built through the combination of earned media, executive visibility, thought leadership, owned research, customer proof points, and consistent presence across the channels where influence is shaped. No single tactic delivers it alone.
- Your PR agency should be the starting point. Strategic PR agencies operate at the intersection of reputation, trust, influence, and narrative control – which is exactly where category authority is built. That makes them the natural first port of call, ahead of advertising or performance marketing.
