Meet Luke

Written by  Iris Guo

IMPACT is a people-first organisation and includes our Emerging Talent Program. These internships aim to invest in the future of the PR communications industry and develop a pool of work-ready graduates, while providing students with a practical understanding of agency life.

For six weeks across May and June, Luke Finnegan is joining us from the USA and will be immersed in all things public relations in the Australian media landscape.

Luke is currently a student at the University of Dayton, studying Communication. Previously an Audio Engineering Major, he became fascinated by the public relations aspects. In his spare time, he produces Hip-Hop and RnB music with his friends and enjoys trips to the beach and hiking.

We sat down with Luke to discuss what he has experienced in his time with us so far.

Interning at IMPACT

Q. What experience were you most looking forward to with this internship?

A. I am looking forward to getting work experience in the industry to help kickstart my career. I am also interested in learning the differences in communication styles between Australian and American cultures

Q. What work have you been involved in at IMPACT?

A. I have been involved in building media databases, contacting local journalists, vetting potential influencers, crafting social media posts, and developing content, including the ATYP Annual Appeal blog.

Q. What work have you enjoyed the most?

A. The aspect of work I have enjoyed the most so far is working on social media posts. I enjoy photo editing and the process of writing and editing captions to hook the attention of audiences.

Q. What do you like most about working at IMPACT?

A. The work environment at IMPACT is very welcoming. As an American, I did not know anyone from Sydney when I first arrived, which was a little frightening. My co-workers have been very friendly, patient, and helpful throughout this internship. They have taught me useful software and communication skills that I will use in my future career.

The Aussie experience

Q. What are you enjoying most about your time in Australia?

A. The nature and scenery in this beautiful city. The Bondi to Coogee Beach Walk has probably been the most memorable part of my trip so far. I really enjoy seeing aspects of nature that are uncommon to New Jersey and the States in general.

Q. Have you been to Australia before? Do you plan on travelling outside of Sydney?

A. This is my first time visiting Australia. I’ve been to the Blue Mountains as I love hiking. I also love beaches so would like to visit the Gold Coast for a weekend.

Q. What has surprised you the most about Australia or Australians?

A. I have found Australians are so open and willing to discuss American politics. Most people I interact with from the States keep their political opinions to themselves because it can cause division between individuals.
