Nine signs AI news deal
Nine Entertainment has signed an agreement allowing Microsoft Copilot to use content from its mastheads to help generate AI responses.
The AI platform will now be able to provide summaries based on journalistic insights from several Nine-owned news publications, including the Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and WA Today. Access behind the paywalls of these websites will also be included.
The move follows ChatGPT’s 2024 licensing agreement with News Corp and Gemini’s 2025 agreement with Australian Associated Press (AAP). These deals mark a change from AI models scraping news to publishers supplying content to AI platforms for compensation, attribution, and traffic.
As AI platforms depend more heavily on respected news sources, positive earned media in credible publications is becoming increasingly critical for brands. Quality media coverage not only influences how AI platforms describe and recommend companies, but also how they are ranked and perceived in digital environments.
Albanese’s podcast comments disappoint
Bush Deep podcaster Nikki Osborne recently asked Prime Minister Anthony Albanese whether he would ‘shag, marry or date’ Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, and Rhonda Burchmore.
After initially declining to participate in the game, Albanese selected “all of the above” for the Australian popstar.
Online debate has since been sparked, with liberal senator Sarah Henderson being among those arguing that the comments were inappropriate and disrespectful to women. Conversely, others believe that the reaction to these comments was overblown, given the PM’s broader record on gender equality.
The controversy serves as a timely reminder for all spokespeople and interviewees that not every question requires an answer. As we explore in IMPACT’s media training sessions, the best communicators know when to reframe or redirect the question.
Crackdown on gambling advertising
New reforms are to be made on gambling advertisements in Australia.
The Labor government is now planning to prohibit gambling companies from entering into sponsorship and promotional arrangements with celebrities.
Regardless of the size of their audience, the ban will apply to any ‘person of note’ ranging from sports professionals to podcasters and influencers.
These amendments are intended to reduce the exposure of gambling to younger audiences, particularly on digital and social media platforms. They are also part of a wider reform which includes limiting television, radio and online advertising, and bans on gambling promotions at sporting venues and on uniforms.
Communications and Sports Minister, Anika Wells has argued that influencer marketing allows betting companies to reach young audiences, including children in ways that traditional advertising methods do not. However, critics across parliaments and gambling reform groups have contended that these steps, while in the right direction, don’t go far enough.
