How to build authority: The new currency of trust and visibility

In today’s digital landscape, true leadership is the ability to influence, inspire, and shape conversations.

When we apply this to the digital world, we refer to this as authority. The Google algorithm (E-E-A-T) rewards it, and AI search platforms cannot operate without it. But how do you achieve it?

Building leadership authority requires more than a strategic approach; it calls for a conscious recognition of how AI is transforming the way we communicate, create and connect.

One thing is certain: The organisations that actively embrace this shift will set themselves on the path to strengthen their position of trust and visibility as reputable and authoritative sources for AI to draw on.

There is no ‘I’ in team

Authority and reputation aren’t built on any one individual; in fact, it’s the collective effort of many that will drive and reinforce the credibility of an organisation.

That’s why it’s critical to identify subject matter experts to represent the various territories or narratives that a company wants to lead on. Having a diverse group of specialists to call on also ensures that expertise shines through, with the added bonus of allowing conversation to evolve over time.

With 74 per cent of Australians concerned about the level of misinformation online, combined with a declining trust in institutions, the ability for organisations to build rapport with its audiences is vital.

At IMPACT, we map key client spokespeople to relevant topics and audiences to ensure each client territory or narrative is delivered by the most credible voice. For example, a technical expert might be the most equipped to discuss the introduction of new technologies, whereas an executive in the HR department may provide stronger commentary on workforce trends or challenges.

When there is an alignment between the message and the messenger, audiences are more likely to lean in.

Social media as a reputation tool

For executive leaders, social platforms are a non-negotiable. They are an extension of reputation and a vital channel to build authority and enhance visibility in an increasingly digital-first landscape.

An up-to-date LinkedIn profile not only signals authority but also builds recognition and increases discoverability. We recently discussed the importance of leveraging your online presence and the rise of journalists actively searching for experts and case studies on social platforms.

This doesn’t mean constant posting or self-promotion; rather, it’s about regular engagement that offers meaningful insights and commentary.

Leaders who cultivate a strong and thoughtful online presence by commenting on industry news or sharing organisational milestones increase their chances of being found when the media looks for credible voices.

Opening the door to new opportunities

With expertise, presence, and storytelling in place, leaders naturally become more visible. This is especially important in today’s AI-driven information landscape.

With increased visibility comes the opportunity to expand an organisation’s presence, whether it’s through representation at industry events, panel participation, entering awards, appearances on podcasts, through to requests for thought leadership bylines.

When these new prospects present themselves, embracing them with confidence can lead to a cycle of influence, engagement and reach, which strengthens over time.

Consistency equals credibility

Building authority isn’t a one-off campaign, it’s a discipline that is earned through quality and consistency. Thinking back to the team approach, when leaders from the same organisation are communicating the same narrative, it reinforces cohesion and credibility.

Developing and maintaining trust doesn’t happen overnight, it requires a sustained and united cross-company effort. Organisations that leverage the expertise of their leaders, amplify their voice through social media, and seize opportunities for visibility will ultimately succeed in building authority.
