Get to know IMPACT’s intern, Mary-Ann
19.04.2021

What are you studying?

Bachelor Arts / Advanced Studies (Media & Communications) majoring in Psychological Science at the University of Sydney.

What do you like about it?

The degree is quite broad which allows me to choose a major that gives me a holistic learning experience encompassing science and arts. When studying my PR unit last year, I was really engaged and loved that all the assessments were real-world tasks, like media pitching, case study writing, and crisis and issues management.

What do you read and consume?

I’ve become a big podcast listener over the last year. I’ve been engaging in lots of news podcasts like The Squiz, and After Work Drinks, and I really like to read The Guardian and The New Yorker long-form articles.

What has been the best part of your internship so far?

I really enjoy having the opportunity to understand IMPACT’s clients, both Corporate and Consumer, and how PR can provide value across different sectors and brands. There are so many ways that content and communications activities can be done to best support clients. Last week I was supporting the team on activity for a corporate research and advisory firm, and this week I have been supporting community outreach for an industry grants initiative.

What do you want to do next?

I want to continue to gain experience in various areas of communications. I am keen to understand what work looks like across the industry, such as in Government policy or a large corporation, to understand different management styles and cultures.

What is a fun fact about you?

I am a big sitcom fan. I’ve watched all of Seinfeld, Friends and How I Met Your Mother, as well as comedies like Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn 99.
