Does your website design need a refresh? Ten questions to ask yourself
01.06.2015

The ‘Mobilegeddon’ hype of 2015 reflected a wider sentiment in the business community. When Google announced that its new algorithm would push down non-mobile-friendly websites rankings, corporations panicked. It was surprising to see that so many Fortune 500 company’s website designs still weren’t mobile friendly*

The new algorithm has not affected every company equally. The impact has been dependent on how many visitors search for, and access, websites from mobile phones in comparison to desktop users. For those companies with only a small percentage of consumers landing on their page via mobile, the change to Google’s analytics can be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat.

Companies should learn from this latest hysteria and begin a long-term path to redeveloping their websites to a platform that offers a mobile-friendly format, while also evaluating the overall functionality and content of the site.

It seems like a daunting task, but here are ten things to consider when approaching a website refresh:

  1. What are your overall business objectives and how does the website support that vision?
  2. Does the look and feel of the website design and functionality reflect your brand’s values?
  3. What does your company do? What are the products and/or services that you offer? How can these best be illustrated on your website?
  4. What is the purpose of your website?
  5. What budget are you allocating to the project?
  6. Who is your ideal audience? What are the top five reasons an ideal customer would visit your website? E.g. Contact forms, brochure requests/downloads, telephone number etc.
  7. What content is most important/relevant to your mobile users?
  8. How many pages are you considering and which pages are visited most (based on your Google analytics)?
  9. Are you happy with the website’s functionality? What further requirements would be ideal?
  10. What are some other websites you admire for their design or functionality? Are there any websites that you can take inspiration from?

Website redevelopment is a rewarding process which can have a wonderful impact on every function within the business.
