The network has been having weekly videoconferences to discuss how each country has been impacted by COVID-19, and how agencies are helping their clients through this extraordinary and unprecedented time.
Like us, most agencies have been helping clients with their COVID-19 messaging and holding statements, reviewing crisis plans (when did you last look at yours?) and social media policies.
Many of our global partners are seeing a slowdown to the advertising-side of their businesses as clients redirect investment into PR, content and reputation management. In South Africa, Reputation Matters clients are using the time to do research, and work on brand building and perception management using the agency’s free eBook which offers 40 tips and tricks to manage your reputation during lockdown.
In Sweden, Joi Communication’s event-based work has been postponed, but the agency is busy providing support for a client that is working on a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as a home design company that is using the time to ramp up activity to take market share.
Pagefield in the UK is starting to see some early signs of green shoots, now that initial panic has subsided, and clients begin to get on with the ‘new normal’. In the US, O’Malley Hansen clients are pivoting where they can, with Haines shifting to production of face masks, and like in Australia, food category clients are also doing well.
In Switzerland at Bernet Relations, it’s all about online workshops for client teams and executives to upskill for LinkedIn, online writing and digital trends, while internal communications for client employees also remains in high demand. Austria’s Communication Matters is also focused on internal communications, with the country’s employees working from home for over a month now and 20 per cent of the population consisting of single person households.
In Germany, finance-sector clients are busy, and pulse-checks are getting cut through in a COVID-19 heavy news cycle. In Hungary, Strategic Scope says social media work is keeping the agency busy during this period and in Russia, investor relations work has slowed considerably.
FMCG work is doing well with our new partner in the United Arab Emirates, Shamal Communications, who are starting to work with clients on the recovery phase – we can share more of their work here next week.
Government work has been put on hold in Egypt, but private sector and management consulting work is carrying on for CID Consulting.
Our Spanish partners, Cariotipo, are working hard with their gambling client in what seems to be one of the hardest-hit markets in the world right now. Interestingly, online gambling in Australia was two thirds higher than normal this week (67 per cent). In another difficult market, our Italian partners, Ad Mirabilia, are offering new services such as personal branding to help spokespeople build their profile and establish a stronger presence.
